Times Higher Education Subject Ranking 2021 Released | IISc Bangalore Only University From India To Secure a Position in Top 100

New Delhi, October 30 | Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Ranking 2021 has been Released on October 29, 2020. A total of 1,512 universities has been ranked across 11 subject areas where IISc Bangalore became the only Indian University to secure a position in Top 100.

The Indian Institute of Sciences (IISC) has secured 94th position in Engineering and Technology Stream and 96th position in the Computer Science Stream.

The University of Oxford has topped the rankings for the fifth consecutive year, while Stanford University and Harvard University stand at second and third position, respectively.

The US-based universities have dominated the ranking by securing top positions in nine subject areas. However, it has missed out on the first position for clinical and health, and computer science. In both these categories, the UK has grabbed the top position.

Apart from the Top 100, some of the Indian Universities have managed to place themselves in the Top 500 bracket.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has been placed in the 301-400 bracket in the engineering stream. Jamia Millia Islamia and Thapar University are in the 401-500 bracket. 

In Arts and Humanities Stream, Jawaharlal Nehru University (401-500) and University of Delhi (500+) are the only two Indian institutions that have made it to the list of global rankings.

Banaras Hindu University and Jawaharlal Nehru University are among a total of nine Indian universities that have been listed in THE World University Rankings for social science falling in the 501-600 bracket. 

The seven other universities are – Aligarh Muslim University, Amity University, University of Delhi, University of Calcutta, JMI, University of Mumbai and Punjab University.

THE World University Rankings 2021 has considered five parameters for assessing universities: Teaching (30%), Research (30%), Citations (30%), Industry Income (2.5%) and International Outlook (7.5%).

About Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. The publisher had collaborated with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) to publish the joint THE–QS World University Rankings from 2004 to 2009 before it turned to Thomson Reuters for a new ranking system from 2010–2013. 

The publication now comprises the world’s overall, subject, and reputation rankings, alongside three regional league tables, Asia, Latin America, and BRICS & Emerging Economies which are generated by different weightings.

THE Rankings is often considered as one of the most widely observed university rankings together with Academic Ranking of World Universities and QS World University Rankings.
