IIT Bombay has announced the exam dates for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2021 and is scheduled to be held in the month of February 2021. The organising committee has introduced several changes in GATE 2021 which are related to eligibility criteria, introduction of new subjects and option to appear for one more paper. While coming up with the date for GATE 2021, IIT Bombay have considered the impact of COVID-19. The exam will be conducted between February 5-7 and February 12-13, 2021.
Major changes introduced in GATE 2021 exam
The organising team of the exam led by Professors Deepankar Choudhury, Upendra Bhandarkar and Mohd. Aslam of IIT Bombay has introduced multiple changes in the exam. These include:
1. Two new subjects introduced: GATE 2021 will now cover 27 subjects. Two new subjects, Environmental Science and Engineering, or ES, and Humanities and Social Science, or XS have been introduced. This will now boost the career prospects of students from ES and XS discipline. GATE scores are used as recruitment criteria by many organization’s including PSUs.
2. A Students can appear for two subjects: Students can now opt for two subject papers (from a prescribed set of combinations). Earlier the students could choose only one subject paper. This will open up opportunities for multi-disciplinary studies
3. Third Year Students can appear for GATE 2021: Students in the third year of their undergraduate programmes will also be eligible for GATE. Eligibility criteria to appear for GATE-2021 has been relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (ongoing) to minimum 10+2+3 (ongoing). The relaxation will help students get an additional chance to improve their score and help them secure their career options.

Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay was quite impressed with the changes introduced in the GATE 2021 by the organising committee. He said, “I am particularly delighted at the creation of much needed new career opportunities for those in the Humanities and Social Sciences area as this may serve as one single standardized criterion for admission to various masters and doctoral programs in various IITs and other universities in India”
About GATE 2021 Exam
GATE 2021 will be multiple choice questions (MCQs) based exam. The exam consist of 65 questions with a total of 100 marks. The sections covered in the exam are core engineering topics, aptitude questions (15 marks) and engineering math (10 – 15 marks). The
GATE is a national level exam conducted jointly by IISc Bangalore and Seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of Department of Higher Education MHRD and National Coordination Board (NCB) GATE.
